Local entertainer Danny Lopez competes in The X Factor

What does it take to become successful in the entertainment business? Some of the answers to that question would include good looks, talent, personality, perseverance and determination. But it also takes a certain indefinable quality. The French have a phrase for it. They call it Je ne sais quoi". Roughly translated it would mean I don t know what". It is this indefinable quality that the television show The X Factor tries to find in talented young singers.

One of those talented young singers, who competed in this year s auditions was none other than Tenerife s own Danny Lopez. Danny knew from the time he was a young boy that he wanted to be a singer. However, it wasn t until he began studying and performing with W.I.N.G. that he knew he could succeed as a singer. He stayed with the group for four years, then struck out on his own and began performing professionally. He performs solo and with a group in various hotels around the island. In 2003, he competed in the Tenerife Pop Idol competition held at Decades in Las Américas.
Danny learned about The X Factor auditions from the Internet. If he could win the competition, it would be a great boost for his professional career. The prizes for the winner included 1 million pounds and a recording contract with BMG. The judges for the competition were Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Sharon Osborne. One of these three would also be his manager if he won the competition. He contacted the show and was given a time, date and location for the first round of auditions. This initial one was an open audition, which meant that they could stop auditioning people whenever they chose. So it was important that Danny and arrive early. Danny flew to Birmingham at the end April arrived at the audition site at 3:00 a.m. Even having arrived so early, he was still 13th in line. This guaranteed, however, that he would definitely be heard. Danny had one minute to impress the judges. He did impress them and was selected to move on to the second audition. The number of people, who auditioned nationwide was 20,000. In this first round of auditions, that number was reduced to 8000. In the next round of auditions, Danny would be competing against 2000 other performers in Birmingham.
On June 25th, Danny competed in the next round of auditions. This time he would have two minutes to impress the judges. For one minute he would sing the song from his original audition, then he would have another minute to sing a new song for the judges. Once again, the judges recognized Danny s talent and sent him through to the next round of auditions. At this point, the 2000 competitors had been reduced to 50. The third round of auditions was held on the same day. Unfortunately, this was not to be Dany s moment. As Sharon Osborne said, Nice face, good song, lovely voice. Just not your day".
Danny was obviously disappointed, but he was pleased to have made it as far as he did. The good news is that he can try again next year. In the meantime, he ll continue to perform at venues around Tenerife. He ll gain experience, polish his act and widen his repertoire. Dany is a very nice, polite, personable young man. The singer that he admires most is Robbie Williams. Several years ago when Danny was asked if he was ready to handle fame and success he answered honestly that he didn t know but that he hoped he would and could handle them as well as Robbie Williams had.
Keep your eyes on now Dany La Cruz. His star is rising and one day we ll be able to say We knew you when. . .
